Hey Bill, that's exactly what I did when I was building in the U.S. Generally, I found the best decking timber in the outer suburbs, where more decking work was being done. Lunch hour, I was often out seeing if a new pallet of 2"x8" had been opened. The 1" lumber is usually too picked-over to be worthwhile.

PS: I always left the stacks neat when I was finished searching, and I think it helped on my later searches, with help opening new pallets.
