I have read about using plastic staples used in cold-molding veneer for wooden hulls without a big vacuum system for a a few years. I think it's not more widely known because cold-molding wood hulls is not the kind of thing that happens in home shops all that often, and most professional shops that cold mold use vacuum setups.

I have a hard time imagining how it would be all that helpful in kayak building, but I'm sure if it would be someone is going to take your post and think of a good use...
