As the noob questions continue... :)

Today I got oriented with how to safely operate a table saw and ripped a few strips. These happened to create flatsawn strips (cool grain) but it didn't matter because it was scrap knotty lengths leftover from a paddle blank.

Looking at my flatsawn boards, the orientation lends itself well to creating quartersawn strips (except in the middle), except that they'd be way too wide. My initial impression was that I'd want to rip a few inches of wood out, then orient it 90 degrees and rip the 1.5" face in half so I have two thinner sections to rip ~3/4" thick strips.

Is this standard? Do people rip "typical" sized chunks to minimize waste?
