I built two kayaks about five years ago using 1/8" luan and it worked just fine. I used 4oz glass on the deck and the inside and outside of the hull. The boats are 18' (Chris Cunninghams Greenland design) and upon completion each weighed in at 42 pounds. I easily found all the voids in the plywood by shining a light through it (100 watt bulb) and after marking them out just avoided using those areas. I have to admit the boats are showing some wear due to the fact they have been kept outside most of their life (I need a bigger garage) but otherwise they have served my wife and I just fine. After I get a new garage built I'm planning to build a couple of fresh boats and I might just use luan again!
