I have six different spokeshaves a couple have depth adjustment screws. The Stanley No 51 (without the depth screws) works just great. The trick on shaving a spoke or paddle loom is to adjust the blade for a very fine cut at one side of the blade and a coarse cut at the other side. Then you can easily control the depth of cut by where on the width of the blade the shaving peals off the blade. When you are making wide shavings across the blade the depth screws really help. A little tune up and a sharp blade will eliminate chatter especially on soft woods. You want a flat bottom spokeshave carving for paddles. eBay is a great source.
: Simeon,
: I have a preloved Stanley Model #151, purchased from ebay. I really
: like it because it has 2 adjustment screws to control the depth
: of the iron. I have not yet mastered this tool, but I do use it
: more and more often. It is really an under-rated tool that
: deserves more praise.
