It's not Nick's method, which is why you're not seeing it in his book. I suppose those of us answering these questions need to be more clear about this.

It's Vaclav's method from One Ocean Kayak, that many of us have adapted for use since it's such an elegant way to make the supports for hatches. Directions are on his web site (One Ocean's) and he also offers a building guide just for making these which is well done.
