Hi Paul.
I went for a quick and easy, if not the prettiest solution.
Cut two pieces of 1/4" ply, 15"x15".(not critical)
Attach (screw and glue) two 15" x 11/2" square battons (not critical) to the underside with a
channel between them that just grips your bars.
Glue a square of 4" thick, soft foam to the top of each board.
The kayak will pull down into the foam spreading the load when lashed down tight.
I always use three ropes. One over each bar, plus one from the rear bar, over and round the
front of the cockpit coming, to serve as a restraining rope. In case you need to stop suddenly!!!!
My guillemot will travel quite comfortably like this at speeds above 70mph. without front or
rear end ties.
Pretty low tech but I hope this helps.
