I've always used a foam pool noodle. The trick is to use four straps instead of two. One strap goes from around the yak and around the tip of the bars on one side. Another strap goes around the yak at the same point and around the opposite tip of the bars on the other side. Repeat on the other bar. So basically, you have two straps opposing each other. Kinda like that. Its incredibly secure. No cradles necessary.
