If you are going to build your own planes, you may want to check out James Krenov's approach. I can't remember if it is detailed in "The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking" or " A cabinet Maker's Notebook". He has great instructions on how to build a very usable and comfortable tool. I have used his approach to make several planes that were tailored for specific projects.
