The most important reason for the foot hump is getting the feet, as well as the knees, vertical and centered for the forward stroke. My knees can only pump up and down a little over an inch or so, which is less than a sprint kayaker would want, but it's enough and a good compromise for a firm fit for rolling. For rolling, I can spread my knees and feet outward. I haven't rolled the kayak, but with the deck flat most of the way across, I feel like I'm going to have good grip and leverage. But the feet centered and verticle in the middle helps me keep a good posture while paddling. When splayed out, I feel like my back wants to hunch.
