Jim,

have you looked at vBulletin ? One of the woodworking sites that I frequent (sawmillcreek.org) uses an option in it called "Hybrid View" in which a tree-like view is presented at the top (similar to the current view more in Kayakforum), and then you see the specific post is displayed at the bottom - however, the software allows the user to use other views instead by default (I use the hybrid view by default). At the top level, it shows a collapsed view of the conversations, and the hybrid mode is used when you select a specific conversation/thread.

One great feature of vBulletin (and probably most modern forum software, perhaps Tetra-WebBBS has it too, I haven't seen it ?) is that it allows you to flag the threads that you're interested in, so that you can "follow" them (get notification when a new post is added to it).

I 'd also cast my vote for a more modern forum software (even though my participation is very minimal, so take it with a grain of salt) - things are flowing so fast in Kayakforum that the current view doesn't allow me to see a "10,000 feet view "of the conversations and determine which one to look at (I'd prefer a consolidated/collapsed view of the discussion at the topmost level at least).
