: I am wondering if anyone is aware of compatibly problems dying the
: 7 oz nylon from Dyson with acid dye from Corey. I called the
: Skin Boat Store and left a message. Was hoping to start in the
: morning. Any help would be appreciated.
Why not just tint the finish yiu are using to waterproof the nylon? What color are you thinking of? The use of a dye, which soaks into the fibers, as opposed to a pigment, which would sit on top of the fibers is really necessary if the fabric is not going to be coated--such as fabrics for clothing. Nylon can take some beautiful and vibrant dye colors, but I believe they need to be activated by chemical action, or heat, to get the nylon material to accept the color.
Personally, I wouldn't bother. I'd use paint to get a brilliant opaque color, or tint the urethane coating to get a more subdued effect. I've seen requests for information on dyeing fabrics mostly from people who want their kayak skins to be closer to the color of natural animal skins, or a flesh-brown color. A little rust (finely ground iron oxide pigment added to their coating does the job, and it will never fade. It also adds osome UV protection which increases the life of the coating. Any solid pigment will increase the UV protection, many pigments are natural minerals which won't fade. Dyes don't have those advantages. They do fade with time, and being Under the coating, as opposed to being mixed with it, they can give no UV protection to the coating over them.
Just some thoughts]
