: I did a rotten job of cove and beading (too shallow a cove) and the
: result was a lot of gaps between strips. The end result was I
: had to do a lot of planing that resulted in a hole (see below).
: My thought is to cut portions of the strips out around this area
: and place new pieces into the resulting area much like you would
: do in fitting the closing strip. I would just cut along the
: grain, cutting out a couple of strips. The part I am not sure of
: is the crosscut. I have just about any tool needed and I am
: thinking of using an exacto knife to cut accross the grain on a
: slight bevel.
: Any comments? (Besides the one I would make which would be
: "Why the heck did you keep going when you must have seen
: that the gaps were too large???")
If the hull is not fair and that caused the plane-through then there is something else to fix other than the hole. First, I would compare the station profile on both sides.
Grain patterns change all the time with butt or scarf joints, both of which are common enough. If the planed area is relatively flat, why not lay a patch in top of the hole, make sure it fits all round before gluing - you may have to do a bit more planing for that to be so. If the surface was proud, causing the plane-through, this would be an opportunity to force it back in. After the glue sets you can fair it in, being a bit more careful this time. You will have the equivalent of an elliptical scarf, it may well just look like an interesting grain pattern.
Caveat: I haven't done this so I am just hypothesizing, but it sounds doable.
