I agree with Kirk, a long tapered patch will disapear more easily into the surrounding wood and will be easier to cut too. Most of the time the only one that'll know where this patch is, is you. Odds are that no one else will ever see it when it's done. Just be a bit careful to match the color of the wood, the grain you won't match but if the color is close after it's glassed and varnished, no one will see it.
