I just finished doing the same thing but I used 3/4 nylon webbing. My jig looks remakably the same as yours but mine was made of two copper blocks I found that had a 3/4 groove deep enough on each to fit the folded webbing (fluke and incredible luck I know).
I found that after making ten of them using the propane torch I put them through quality control by flicking and twisting and abusing the melted area a bit and they all were very brittle and broke ridiculously easily.
After learning this I tried using a heat gun which melted the webbing without fire or smoke and these fittings easily passed the abuse test. Glad I did this before putting them in the boat. I bet this is very subject to the exact material being melted... my suggestion do one or two and abuse them a little to make sure they are tough enough to go into service.
