Made mine with very similar wood blocks. Just used a 2" spring clamp to hold them together. For the hatch covers I will be adding a piece of dowel inside the loop. The pic here is just a dry fit. All surfaces still need varnish. The dowel provides a nice detail plus allows for a better grip without making the loop so big as to get a finger through it.
