Not a bad starting point. To save wood I now just use a 3/4" thick plank, not much wider (what the timber yard stocks) than the required width and only use hand-tools. Just means I don't have a bandsaw :-) or :-(

One thing that I've been told and I have noticed makes a difference to performance is edge thickness. I'd suggest trying one with "moderately" sharp edges. I find they have less tendency to flutter (they shouldn't if used correctly) and seem to grip the water better.
