Can you clarify what type of planer you are looking for- Thickness planer, jointer, or handheld?

For a thickness planer I highly recommend the Ridgid model that HD sells. It has a capacity of just over 12" so you can easily plane stock 12" wide with a little leeway. I have planed lots of hardwoods and it works amazingly well.

For a Jointer, also check out the Ridgid bed jointer, but Delta has a really nice jointer. My only suggestion- get the biggest one you can afford. I have the Delta bench jointer and soon learned that a jointer isn't much good without a long bed.

For a handheld, Bosch gets great reviews and has a nice price to boot.
