A simple solution, if your planer is wide enough, is to feed multiple pieces through it, staggered so they overlap by a foot or so. You can even sandwich your stock with thin pieces of scrap on each side.

: If anyone does get a planer, I strongly suggest getting a second
: set of blades at the same time you get the planer.

If you can afford it, the ultimate answer is to get a planer with a spiral carbide cutter head. They last a long time and each cutting element has four edges that can be rotated into place as necessary. They're also much quieter. I installed one on my jointer and the difference is huge. Unfortunately, nobody makes one for my Dewalt planer.
