I have done this with walnut and with ash. I was able to use strips close to 1/8 thick. To get them bendy I soaked them for a few days in household ammonia (cleaning supplies section of your supermarket). This is an alternative to steam that doesn't take as much equipment. It does darken the wood to a brown colour. After a few days in an upright length of ABS pipe the strips will be like a soggy spagetti noodle. I had no problem going around even the tighter curve at the bow (I still needed lots of clamps though).
