I cut the stem a little different than Tom, though it's on the top of the stem where it's inside the boat, so no one ever sees it. I cut a flat on the stem so it's parallel to the keel, then the stem can be easily clamped to the keel until the glue hardenes. Once it's attached to the keel, just follow Tom's instructions for cutting the stingers, a pull saw makes this "much" easier.

Btw, I've built one of Tom's, the first one Sea Ranger, where I cut the gunwales long, bent them around the forms, decided I liked the shape and left them long. Had to cut really long stems though. So it's a 19 1/2' Sea Ranger :) Just a SR with really long ends.
