: Hi Stephan,
: Have you given thought to the 1/4" x 1" Red Oak trim that
: most of the big box stores sell? Already cut to shape and comes
: in 10 ft lengths. Snip it with some sharp anvil cutters and pop
: it in your steamer. I think it worked out to $20-30 for a 17
: foot single kayak. Bendable in about as little time as Bill
: suggested even though I think it's kiln dried. About 10/15%
: breakage. Even used the 1/4" X 1&1/2" to steam
: bend for a coaming. Worked for me.

I've overall had good luck with red oak, it's not terribly rot resistant and tends to turn black when it's exposed to water over time though. White oak is pretty much the ideal, but not all wood that's sold as white oak really is. There are other species (just read about this somewhere) that are often substituted for white oak. Laminating white oak is kind of a pain it's full of natural oils that resist most glues, has to have the surface scrubbed with acetone (with a scotch brite pad) to remove the oils at the surface first before it's glued.
