: While that rule of thumb works for stock that's an inch thick or
: more, it doesn't work for rib stock. I find that 3-4 minutes is
: plenty for 1/4" thick ribs. Over-steaming drives moisture
: OUT of the wood and makes it brittle. It's important to remember
: that the purpose of steaming is to heat the wood evenly to a
: temp of ~212F. Steam is just an efficient vehicle for
: transferring heat at the right temp, the moisture in it is
: largely irrelevant.
I'm still experimenting with doing this on light thin materials :)
I've done some steaming on big boat ribs, though not in many years, but am now just learning on small stuff. For some reason softwood takes longer to steam than hardwoods, counter to what I'd guess.
