: Hi, I am getting close to finishing the wood frame of my Sea
: Ranger. When I start to skin the frame I'll be using Cory's
: prima nylon, 8.5 oz, and poly two part. I am wondering if anyone
: here has used this system? And what would be your advise on
: wetting the nylon before you sew. If you do wet the nylon, how
: wet do you get it? Will a spray bottle due as you pull the skin?
: Thanks, Dave
I am doing my 3rd boat using 12 oz nylon from Dyson, and Corey goop. Actually, I applied the goop to the hull today, deck will be done tomorrow.
My previous 2 boats had also 12 oz nylon (from Skinboats) and goop. All came out very tight when dry, and still tight after several hours on the water, so I think my method works.
I spread the nylon on the garage floor, and soak it in water for couple of hours. The nylon must be throughly wet.
I do the bow and stern pockets as described on skinboats web site. I pull the wet nylon very tight. Wet nylon is harder to sew than dry, but not overly so.
While sewing, I keep sprinkling the skin with water (using garden hose) so the nylon stays wet while sewing.
After the nylon dries, it becomes drum-tight. I make sure the threads are running symetrically, so the drying nylon does not deform the frame. I can see the gunwales slightly bent inwards by the nylon, but the rest of the boat shape is unchanged.
After nylon dries, I apply the goop, as described on skinboats.org.
Again, at the end I have boat with nylon skin that stays tight when wet.
When I finish my current boat I may post a few pictures.
Good luck with your skin
