Kevlar is very strong in tension and that's why it is used in/on boat hulls. But it is poor as an abrasion layer over anything because it's yarns are so stong. If you gouge Kevlar hard enough yarns will be pulled loose. On production boats the problem is contrilled because there is athick gell-coat over the Kevlar.
Trying to repair such gouges rather futile because the yarns are difficult to cut off and sanding Kevlar is a waste of time. It makes yellow fuzz that almost impossible to get rid of.
Other problems are weight caused by Kevlar's ability to soak up vast amounts of epoxy and the fast that it never wets out clear.
Kevlar works well in fabric laminate hulls where the Kevlar is on the inside and is covered by numerous layers of ordinary fiberglass.
: I am building a bootlegger canoe out of mahogany and about ready to
: glass. I have seen Nick put kevlar in bottom of kayaks is there
: any reason to do this with a two person canoe (hopefully
: wouldn't be hitting any rocks) should I use a 6 oz glass cloth
: or heavier? Second I have used west system epoxy on my sailboats
: and find it very troublesome in high humidity. Does anyone know
: if the Mas or system three would be a better choice of resin to
: use as the humidity is often high here in north carolina.
: Thanks
