One thought is to use a fairing board instead of a plane. If the board spans the beam width, 23" or so, you can sand both edges at once and they keep each other in check. There really isn't much wood to remove so both edges get flat pretty quickly with some course grit paper. Do the same with the deck edge and they'll mate up well.
