Wanted to stay away from metal that would inevitably become corroded, even stainless steel.
I also don't think that the thin metal of a piano hinge would hold up under the force of my feet. Short lengths of piano hinge, or any other thin metal hinge do not hold up well to torque. A work around would be of course adding washers to build up the thickness to close to the hinge part.
A regular house door hinge would work but the holes are too big and they're heavy.

I think within two months I'll be back in the ocean, where more than likely I'll quickly learn the hard way that piano hinges would've been stronger than my carbon fiber fandango.
