I would not use anything other than water on the wood, because there are so many
contaminates in seemingly simple solvents and cleaners.

I don't think this is your issue, I'm only mentioning it as something to stay away from.

If you will provide a photo or if that is difficult, a detailed description, glue type, is what you're seeing
glue lines or blotches or something else, how do you know it's glue? etc.

It will be easier to address your problem and provide an answer.

For instance, I most often use yellow carpenter's glue to bond strips, edge to edge. I use a bead of glue
1/3 the strip width, so I don't have a lot of excess glue all over. I wipe off all the glue I can, inside and out with a damp sponge
before it sets. Scrape it down with a paint style scraper and then soak the wood with a wet sponge.

The soaking wet sponge will raise the wood grain, totally close any staple holes and show any glue as a white spot.

I either scrape off the glue from the wet wood or mark it with a pencil for removal later.

Then I rough sand using 60 grit, wet the wood again, sand with 120 grit, wet again and finish with 220 grit, so any glue
is gone unless I loose my glasses.
