: Hey Rob,
: I've read your roller method a few times now, and I always come
: away a little confused.
: I imagine the roller soaks up epoxy, and as it does the application
: rate changes. It also starts to set on the roller itself, if you
: use it long enough. How often are you swapping out rollers, and
: how do you manage the variation in the amount of epoxy that is
: soaking into the roller over the course of a wet-out?
I like rollers too, as long as you're using the epoxy with the roller it's constantly picking up new resin so it's not setting on the roller. You are pushing the resin around with the roller you're not painting like painting a wall don't roll it back and forth, just push the resin around with the roller. I do though use a brush too and only use a squeegie to tip off any excess when I'm done putting the resin on. I use cut down roller covers on a 3 1/2" roller frame, get two covers from a standard 7" roller cover. You do need to use care to cut the covers clean so there is no loose foam. A utility knife with a new blade will stab thru the core and repeated stabs around the covers will separate them. If I take a break, which I do, while doing a large section like a boat's bottom, I'll start again with a fresh cover, I don't even think about cleaning them though it's possible with white vinegar, I just toss them.
If you try to apply resin at 50 degrees, first it'll likely not be clear, will have visible cloth in the resin, and it'll take a fairly long time to set up, certainly won't be set in 12 hours. I'm not that far from Chicago, maybe 75 miles. We've got 70 degree weather coming fairly soon, I'd wait.
