I have had problems with Gorilla glue in the past (not on a kayak project), so I tend to use Titebond II or III. I've done scarfs on several kayaks, gunwales, chines and keelsons using about 8:1 ratio and titebond with no failures to date. I try not to have the joints near mid ship, but on occasion I have, but I do stagger the joints so they are not all at the same point, and I do use a couple of 1/4" dowels in each scarf just for a little added security. I can't say this about Gorilla glue but excessive clamping is a no-no for yellow glues, it can push the glue right out of the joint. It's called starving the joint in woodworking circles. My local HD has nice 2x2x8' WRC clear grain boards at about $6 each, they work great for all the stringers.
