Hadn't thought about timber, I do know about using them for boatbuilding, very long tradition using scarfs. Butt blocks generally are used as a last resort for repairs on boats that are damaged and there is no reasonable way to disassemble them to do a proper repair. Often this is a stop gap measure, get a bit more use out of the boat till a proper repair can be done.
