It would be ok for gunwales although it would probably make for a heavy boat. I would suggest posting on the Greenland kayak web site. There are a lot of builders in your general area that may be able to get you to a good lumber supplier. Being in the Pac NW I would use red cedar for everything except ribs to keep the weight down.
