When you build a S & G, you don't edge glue the panels like you do with a stripper. The glass tape is used for two reasons. One - it binds the panels together. Two - tape is an easy commodity that comes in convenient widths to use for the purpose.
When CLC first came out, their instructions called for only tape seams and no glass coating over anything. My brother still has his original "Cape Charles 17" and I use it every now and then. It has never had a problem and I sometimes beat on it.
Third - I have hit many rocks with my stripers due to cloudy water and wave action. More often than not, I whack the boat on the bottom but not center keel line.
