: Hey guys
: I'm using Nick Schades book as a guide, and I just finished
: stripping, but the book is a little fuzzy as to what I should do
: next. Should I do the planing and sanding before the cockpit
: coping? Should I fiberglass before doing the coping? Should I do
: te coping first?
: Also, on a slightly similar note, schade outlines a few ways to do
: the coping, I am making a 14 foot great awk, it has a lot of
: vertical distant between the bow and stern side of the cockpit,
: what method would be best?
: Thanks so much, your guys' help has been great
For the vertical distance difference front to back I found it to be a great help to add a recess area around the coaming. For the peaked deck of the Great Auk the recess should come to a point front and back. I planed and sanded after building the recess, then laid fiberglass on the deck. It goes much easier without any vertical coaming riser in the way. Then cut a line back to the riser, build up your riser, add a fillet and then glass the outside of it overlapping a bit (3/4") onto the deck. I then began to build up the lip strip by strip. Then trimmed of the riser flush with the lip, sanded and added glass to the inside of the riser up an over the lip and lapped onto the outside riser. Flip the deck, trim off the risers flush with underside of the deck. Fare, sand and glass inside of deck lapping onto inside riser.
