There at least used to be another way, will still work if you can find it, carbon paper. Lay the plans on the ply, place a sheet of carbon paper under a small section, trace that section then move on, shifting the carbon paper until all the lines are transfered to the wood. Havn't had to use carbon paper in a really long time though, not sure if it's still available or not.

(for the young kids, it was used to make multiple copies when typing on a typewriter)
