Ian,
On mine I slid the shrink wrap on and then overlapped the cords by about 2 inches and lashed them together with some kevlar thread. I used the same knot you use to hold coiled climbing rope (old school) on the thread where you do the wrap over a loop in the thread wrapping towards the closed end and as you near the closed end you put the end of the thread that you are wrapping into the loop and pull the loose end of the loop from the other side of the wrap until the end you are wrapping goes under the wrapped coils. I brushed some epoxy on one side of the thread wraps. Then I put a piece of wood down under the bungee to protect the boat finish when I heated the wrap. The wrap I use aslo has an adhesive on the inside.
