Years ago my brother and I built a couple of cranked shaft canoe paddles.

The shafts were layers of 3mm thick WRC and balsa. The WRC was used for the outer layers of the lamination. We used a layer of glass mat between the WRC and the balsa.

The blades were one layer of carbon on the face, a balsa layer to give some thickness and stiffness to the blade and I think we put a layer of glass or carbon on the back of the blade.

A layer of something like balsa or foam is a better way of stiffening the blade than 4 layers of carbon. Extra layers just add extra weight and extra strength beyond what is needed.

Our blades were about the same weight as commercial carbon blades and they survived several hundred kilometres of C2 paddling with no problems.
