Hi Clayton,

I too use the heavier fabric, it for some odd reason is less expensive than the 2.7 ounce. I've used the 1.8 ounce, it works, it's not as easy to use than the heavier fabric though since it deflects more when you're putting on the fiberglass, sorta trying to work on the surface of a balloon. And it saves a whole 1 ounce per yard length of boat, so for a 17 footer you save somewhat less than 6 ounces :) I used it on the catamaran kayak where every once counts (has two hulls). The heavier material shrinks tighter, makes a more stable surface to glass over.

The dacron ends up being somewhat like a poor man's version of Kevlar in the combined weave, adds a degree of toughness to the total laminate.
