: With weather finally turing a bit warmer these days I can proceed
: with the fiberglassing I have been waiting all winter to start.
: I asked earlier about the sequence I need to follow and am clear
: about that. Except the first step. I guess I should rather say
: "clear as mud". My question is this. I will be using
: system three as my epoxy, the first step is to brush on a
: "soaking coat" on too the deck so that it saturates
: the wood. Then lay the fiberglass on. Here is my question. Do I
: let that first coat dry completely first? That would mean that I
: should do some light sanding before I lay on the fiberglass,
: right. Or do I just let it cure a little then lay the fiberglass
: on? This concerns me though because I would image that I would
: get wrinkles and have difficulty in manuvering the glass. but I
: had heard that the best bond is to build a chemical bond. I know
: I am just too cautious and asking silly questions but I want no
: mistakes at this stage. I will try to capture a picture and
: attach it so you can see what I have done so far. The wood
: working was fun, this fiberglassing is not my thing. But
: understandably necesary.
Hi Eric,
what i do when applying a seal coat is brush on the coat let it soak for only a very short time. Then scrape or squeegee the extra off. Let that harden untill it is not sticky at all. About 8 to 12 hours and you will have a chemical bond. Then proceed with the glass work.
If you have never wet out glass then strip some pannels for bulk heads and glass them first. This will give you a chance to learn and feel comfortable before you work on your kayak.
