Hi Peter,
Lots of good suggestions here, another that comes to mind that would be quick to try is to add some low ballast as the Aleuts did with narrow round-bottomed baidarkas. Just ensure the kayak has adequate flotation. If you use a water bladder, it's buoyancy neutral when the kayak is full of water, just heavier to move around.

The main thing I would suggest, after you decide which solutions are acceptable to you, is to talk it over with him and involve him in the solution. That always worked best for my kids. Good luck.
