: I put on the first coat of varnish yesterday. I'm using epifane's.
: The directions say to sand with 220 grit after 24 hours and
: re-coat. It's been about 26 hours, and the varnish is dry to the
: touch, but is somewhat tacky still. Do I need to wait until it's
: totaly dry and hard? I've tried sanding with 220 grit, but since
: it's a bit soft yet, it's clogging the paper.
First, contact MAS and ask if Epifanes is compatible with their resin.
Epoxy takes weeks to fully cure, so if you have coated with epoxy in the last month
you CAN have compatibility issues.
If the Epifanes is not compatible with your resin it will never cure. I made this mistake
on my first stripper and after 20 years the varnish I put inside the hatches is still slightly tacky.
You can easily remove uncured varnish with fine steel wool and alcohol.
If the varnish and resin are compatible, the first coat of varnish will still take at least two days
to cure. Additional coats will cure in a day.
WET sand the varnish lightly with 220 W/D paper to only remove the shine or level drips/ runs.
Uncured varnish will clog sandpaper, even wet sandpaper. Cured varnish will not.
If you have drips/runs you're applying too much varnish. Apply less and less varnish with the next coats,
until you have no runs but no dry looking spots, and you'll have learned how much to apply with each brush load.
Good luck!
Rob
