Greetings -- this is my first post here, and I am seeking advice about the choice of designs for my first strip-built kayak. I am looking for a craft that will serve a couple of purposes: I want a double so that my wife and I can explore the many beautiful lakes and reservoirs here in the inland Northwest where we live. My wife has also developed an interest in triathlons and open water swimming, so I want to be able to accompany her on her swims for both recreational and safety reasons. Nick Schade's MicroBootlegger appeals to me for several reasons. It is lovely, it is touted as good for novice kayakers, and it is a double short enough for me to build in my small 2 car garage workshop. It is also advertised as a boat that can be paddled solo. When I first conceived this scheme I was heavier, around 185 lbs., but having gotten serious again about fitness in last couple of years, I am down to 158, and shooting for 152 or so. The recommended parameters start with a paddler of 175 lbs. So before I embark on a build that might be unsuitable, and having very little actual kayaking experience (some with heavy plastic rental boats), I wanted some expert opinion on whether or not the occasional use of the MB with a single light paddler sounds like a good idea.

I have a lot of woodworking experience (fine furniture) and a very well equipped but small workshop, so aside from mastering the fiberglassing of the hull, etc. I suspect that I can put the thing together without too much going completely amiss. The big question is whether the boat is the right one for us.
