Plenty of beavers live in the mouths of tidal creeks in the PNW, and I've scared at least one in my kayak, while paddling in a shallow cove.

But, I've only actually been attacked by an otter, who swam up and kicked me in the butt (through the skin of my boat). I was able to fight him off without calling for a pony, though.
