Hi Todd,

Weight is obviously an issue, but having a skirt will keep the water out of the cockpit and let you paddle it. Getting water on the skirt is no biggy.

You will need to learn to wet exit with a skirt, good idea to take lessons if you're new to this. Every kayak shop I've ever seen offers lessons.
