They are pretty simple but you want to make sure to grease the plastic tube properly or you can have a scary time trying to pull it free. Lot's of people report on this problem and I can agree. I got all mine free in the end but sometimes it was a fight.

You are a bit right suspecting they are a PITA but look at it this way: once they are done you never have to unscrew a fitting or re-do a soft padeye when it is time to re-varnish. So in the long run I think they pay off.
