: Hello, i'm a newbie too, but i did build the Sea Rider, Pine was used because it was easier to get ahold of here in lengths, but i did build it to the specs in the plans, it is tippy by the way, found out i've got a lot to learn when a cross current came up and i dumped it, watched my paddle float downstream while i struggled getting the kayak back to shore, but being bull headed, i'm not going to give it up, it seems very stable in quiet water, Best of luck,,Kevin
