In Response To: Strip: Uneven seam between strips (Stephen Troy)

Thanks guys,

So, I sliced through the glue, and found the strip wasn't downward movable. Peeking under the strip I saw a glob of glue was in the way. Also, some of my attempts at slicing and previous attempts at realigning the strips mangled the edges. So I removed the bad strips, replaced them with new ones, and found I still had the same problem. Some Strips aren't lining up very well.

I'm trying to stay detached (grrrr) and look at what the actual problem is. I should note this is for the tail of a baidarka, where strips are bending and twisting, and attaching to beveled forms, so this isn't quite the same as if I were doing this on a regular hull. That said, the problems are occurring prior to the bend/twist.

I see a few possibilities:

Strips aren't of uniform thickness (will double check in the morning)
The beveling of stern piece wasn't done consistently, so while you can hand force them into place, they won't stay there.
Something is wrong with how I determine what "good" is when doing initial fitting.
The pony clamps I'm using aren't sufficient to hold strips in alignment.
I am completely missing something due to being inexperienced fitting strips.

Anything stand out to anybody? I realize I've been asking a lot lately, but I'm on my 4th try on this thing, so I try to go back and do-over prior to asking yet another question.

:Gents,

: I had a "seam" between two strips slip while gluing where
: the edges still touch but one strip is a little higher than the
: other. Unfortunately, it has also glued pretty solidly into that
: position. I suppose I could plane it down and add "backup
: wood" to the rear of the strip prior to glassing, or I
: could try to remove the strip and try to fix it that way. Is
: there a particular rule of thumb when it comes to "leave
: it/plane it/remove it/ignore it" for errant strips?

: Thanks
