I've got one boat with a keyhole cockpit, all the rest have itty bitty ocean cockpits. You just put your bod thru the cockpit and then it's easy to reach.

Helps to have the boat on stands of some sort and the boat upside down then you can comfortably sit and work on the footbraces. Sure then the boat's upside down but that matters little.
