8oz polyester from George Dyson - a fine fabric for skinning kayaks, stronger and longer lasting than canvas - is $6 per yard.
Email George - GDyson@gmail.com - and he'll also send you a pdf of the other fabrics he offers for skinning boats.

FWIW, I have skinned boats with all of the fabrics mentioned (and more), and canvas is the hardest, and my least favorite, to work with.
