Hello again Mike,

Yes, I washed before I sanded, and then again after. I also put a bit of detergent in the water I used for wet sanding. I had to do a couple epoxy fixes which have to harden up before I put the last coat on, so it is not on yet. I will likely get it on first thing in the morning, and will know then if my suspicions were correct and whether my cleanup worked. My fingers are crossed.

Either way, the kayak hits the water on Friday or Saturday. Any overhaul will wait until later in the summer.

: You're right- it sound like contamination. If it were pinholes the
: entire defect would be shiny, just at a lower level than the
: surrounding finish.

: When you prep- always wash before you sand, especially if you know
: you have contamination. Otherwise, if there is any contamination
: you are smearing it around, melting it from the friction, and
: working it into the substrate.
